About That Correspondents Dinner...
"What Could Possibly Go Wrong At The WHCD?," I Asked
The day before Washington gathered for what Politico happily called “prom weekend” in a column full of helpful advice about how to moderate your drinking and approach a celebrity for a selfie, I asked that question and predicted what might happen Saturday night.
Gunfire was not on my list.
But I did lead with this:
What might happen at this year’s White House Correspondents Dinner?
Donald Trump enters to military fanfare, explosions and smoke. A banner unfurls reading “Operation More Epic Fury” and Trump delivers an hourlong attack on the press.
I don’t know about the smoke and music, but the explosions were definitely on the menu. When he got back to the White House, Trump said,
“I was all set to really rip it. And I said to my people, ‘This would be the most inappropriate speech ever made,’” he said in the post-shooting press conference.
“I don’t know if I can ever be as rough as I was going to be tonight.”
Damn. I would have loved to have heard that one.
